Watermelon Carving Contest Winners Announced

Creativity abounds when discovering the sweetness within!

Orlando, FL (August 15, 2012) – It has been a super sweet summer so far for watermelon. In celebration of July as National Watermelon Month, the National Watermelon Promotion Board held the 3rd Annual Watermelon Carving Contest open to watermelon lovers everywhere. Submissions came in from across the globe to enter a watermelon carving in to one of five categories: Most Original, Funniest, Most Elegant, Best Fruit Basket, and Best Carving from Watermelon.org’s Carving Database. Surprisingly, there were no entries in the Best Jack O’Melon category, which prompted the new Best Fruit Basket class to be determined. Each category awards a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place cash winner. A final grand prize category, the Fan Favorite, was voted on through a gallery hosted at the What About Watermelon? blog; this grand prize winner receives $600.

“While this is not the inaugural year for this contest, it is the first time we were able to leverage all of our social media strengths across multiple platforms to gauge interest, invite targeted bloggers, and provide a creative common ground for watermelon lovers everywhere. We are thrilled at the number of entries and at the tremendous skill and creativity for watermelon showcased in each category. I can’t wait until next July!” said Stephanie Barlow, Director of PR and Social Media for the National Watermelon Promotion Board. “The love of watermelon is a shared passion in a strong community. Playing with your food in this sense is half the fun: eating that sweet juicy fruit is the other half, the reward for a fun time had by all.”
