Materials

1 medium-to-large oval or oblong watermelon (seeded or seedless)
Kitchen Knife & paring knife
Cutting board
Green dry erase marker or ¾”-1” thiCK painter’s trim tape
Vegetable peeler
Large bowl & spoon or scoop
Blueberries
Toothpicks or straight pins
Watermelon cubes
Watermelon nose, bow-tie, feet and beak(eyeball images to trim)
Blue Gelatin cubes for water

Instructions

Wash the watermelon under cool running water and pat dry.

  • On a cutting board, place the watermelon on its side and cut off 1/4”-1/2” from the stem end, this will provide a sturdy base.
  • Stand the watermelon upright on the base. Use a dry erase marker to do a simple outline of a penguin’s body, head and wings, using the front 1/2-1/3 of the watermelon. Use the carving image to sketch approximate shape.
  • 1/3 the way from the bottom of the watermelon, draw a straight line around the back, being careful not to go through your penguin outline, this will create your serving bowl.
  • Use the knife of your choice to carefully cut around and away your outline, leaving just the bowl & penguin attached.
  • Hollow out the watermelon serving bowl portion with a spoon or scoop, reserving the watermelon pieces to make diced watermelon for filling.
  • Use a vegetable peeler or paring knife to carve away the green skin of the watermelon to expose the white underneath to add detail for the face, cheeks, and belly.
  • Scrap watermelon pieces can be made into a beak, bow tie, & web feet. Affix the beak, bow tie & 2 blueberries for eyes with toothpicks or straight-pins.
  • Fill the bowl with cut fruit, place on a serving platter and place blue gelatin
