Watermelon is an American Icon. When people enjoy watermelon they think fond of memories of summertime
with family and friends, enjoying a cold slice on patriotic holiday like Memorial Day and The Fourth of July.
Wholesome and sweet, pure rich red, watermelon just feels like America.

The watermelon industry has trained ambassadors that educate while
adding sparkle to any promotion or special event. There are eight
state and one national queen who are sponsored by various state and
national watermelon associations. They are responsible for promoting
their area's watermelon crop. They are available to represent the
watermelon industry at media interviews, store grand openings,
special events, hospitals, schools, festivals and parades.
For more information on individual associations go to the contact us
section or contact NWPB directly.

Introduction
|
The NWPB wants all kids to enjoy watermelon and to lead
active, healthy lifestyles. We have many great tools that
parents, teachers, and other types of community leaders can
use to help teach our children the importance of eating well
and having fun being physically fit.
Meet J. Slice - he's our healthy hero with good tips for kids
on eating right. He has some fun ideas on what you can do with
watermelon. J. Slice is as active as every other kid out there,
and he keeps his energy up with a healthy dose of watermelon!
In 2011, we will be releasing a new J. Slice coloring book. Check
back in the summer!
Our two coloring book stories feature J. Slice "Saving the planet
from Professor Junk Food" and "Rescuing his friends from the
clutches of Lazee." He also shows how to "Take a Bite out of a
Rainbow."
Our coloring pages for kids feature fun recipes while delivering
a subtle health message: watermelon is healthy and delicious, everyday.

J. Slice - Our Healthy Hero
|
|
|
J. Slice is the skateboarding cartoon characted designed to
educate kids about the benefits of eating watermelon. He was
created by the National Watermelon Promotion Board (NWPB) and
is a member of our "Ask the Experts" panel at WhatAboutWatermelon.com
blog.
J. Slice was developed using feedback from focus groups
made up of adults who have daily interaction with the youth market and
elementary school-aged children. The response was very positive by both
groups who felt the character represented the energy and vitality of a
healthy lifestyle that includes eating lots of fruit and vegetables, especially
watermelon.
As for the "J," that part of his name is a little more
of a mystery, but a friend at the NWPB speculates that it stands for "juicy" as in
"Juicy Slice." That makes way more sense than "Joe," which was my first guess for the
name behind Mr. Slice's first initial.

Displays
|
Watermelon lends itself to a wide variety of creativity when it comes to
displays. The NWPB has been host to retail display contests in the US, Canada
and at DeCA Commissaries. While we can provide some basics to get you started,
such as posters, stickers and recipe cards, the rest is up to you!
make sure that the watermelons are all clean and off the floor. You can offer
shoppers ideas on how to cut up a whole watermelon, make a watermelon recipe for
dinner, or carve a watermelon into a unique fruit basket. Remember, you have your
whole store to draw inspiration from! Whether it be beach umbrellas, floral arrangements,
baloons, flags or garlands, a fantastic watermelon display is easy to pull off. And,
it will make your shoppers notice!

Agriculture in the Classroom
|
Agriculture in the Classroom, often referred to as "Ag in
the Classroom," is a grassroots program coordinated by the
United States Department of Agriculture. Its goal is to help
students gain a greater awareness of the role of agriculture
in the economy and society, so that they may become citizens who
support wise agricultural policies.
The program is
carried out in each state, according to state needs and interests,
by individuals representing farm organizations, agribusiness, education
and government. The USDA supports the state organizations by:
- helping to develop Ag in the Classroom programs
- acting as a central clearinghouse for materials and information
- encouraging USDA agencies to assist in state programs, and
- coordinating with national organizations to promote the goal of an increased awareness of agriculture among the nation's students
The National Watermelon Promotion Board is a proud member of the Florida Ag in the Classroom and sits
on the Board of Directors.
