Have Made It

Nuts and bolts definitely make this robot look more realistic, but you could also try using different candy in all shapes and sizes!

Instructions

  1. Read through the directions before you start.
  2. Drain cut watermelon and other fruit before placing it in the carving.
  3. When removing excess flesh try to leave it in big pieces – easier for making melon balls or cubes.
  4. Use a green dry erase marker – wipe off excess marker after making cuts.
  5. For robot decorations use brand-new hardware and pliers. Wash in a dishwasher or in hot soapy water to remove any residue or metal splinters.
  6. Wash the watermelon under cool running water and pat dry.
  7. Stand on its end. Run knife around inside rim of rind and remove flesh in large chunks. Set aside for making cubes for fruit salad. Set on a pedestal made of stainless steel or aluminum. Set pedestal on clean cookie sheet.
  8. Placing the watermelon on its side, cut the watermelon in half. Take the half with the widest opening and trim off ¼”- ½” end. Be careful not to cut too deep into the white part of the rind – this would allow liquid to leak from the bottom of the carving.
  9. Take remaining half and stand on cut side. Trim away rind from top and sides. Cut a large rectangular shape with angled sides that will be used as the head. Leave remaining watermelon in large pieces for cutting cubes for salad.
  10. Affix antennae, eyes and mouth to the head piece. Secure head to back of body, using wooden skewers.
  11. Add arms to side of watermelon body by screwing conduit into the rind. Add legs and hardware to front of base to complete the appearance of a robot.
  12. Fill robot body with drained fruit cubes and add to tray for decoration.
